My large dog accidentally got cat flea medicine. Is it harmful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 99 lbs

I accidentally gave my 99 pound dog an advecta 3 cat drop meant for 3-5 pound cats. I use both advecta 3 for cats and advecta 3 for dogs. I know it's extremely harmful for cats to give dog drops, but is the other way around as harmful with such a small dose on such a big dog?

It looks like the cat flea medication contains fewer ingredients (and the same ones) as the dog one, and the dose given was very small. I would wash off the area you placed the medication if it's been within 24 hours. If you see any signs of illness such as drooling, dizziness, confusion, etc, seeking vet care is best.
