Cat has flea allergy sores on legs. Does she need oral antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Cat has known flea allergy. Recently developed red raised skin ulcers on the back of her back legs. Red with oozing centers. I started cleaning and putting triple antibiotic cream on them. Does she have to have oral antibiotics also? Eating, drinking normally.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Boo-Boo it’s hard to say for sure. If the areas are increasing in size and look infected (as you described) then she will likely need antibiotics. Sometimes this is oral but sometimes we can use injections. Also, this may be from an allergic reaction. If so, she may need antihistamines or steroids. I would take Boo-Boo to a vet for an exam of the lesions and discuss her best treatment option. In the meantime, keep the areas clean with a mild soap and dry. Good luck and kisses to Boo-Boo!
