My cat's ear mites keep coming back. Is it something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has had ear mites off and on through the years and I’ve been treating it with medication and coconut oil but I just don’t know what to do anymore. She’s about 5-6 years old. What should I do?

Ear mites are very easy to treat and should not keep recurring unless this is an outdoor only/feral cat. I really don't think ear mites is the problem. What "medication" have you been using? Coconut oil will do nothing for an ear infection or ear mites; all it is doing is making a mess and can actually make it worse. I'm guessing she probably has an ear infection from either bacteria, yeast or a combination of both. She may also have ceruminous gland hyperplasia or polyps in the ears. You really need to have her examined by a vet so they can look into the ears with an otoscope and then do a cytology (look at the ear wax under the microscope to see what is there). That is where I would start.
