How to help my gassy, overweight dog who hates her prescription food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 10 lbs

My dog Akoya loves to eat. She is extremely gassy, switches between diarrhea and constipation. When she has diarrhea she has mucus and sometimes blood. She has had pancreatitis before, but she doesn't want to eat dog food unless she absolutely has to. She is overweight, reverse coughs, bad breath and easily winded. I have prescription food for her, which she hates. She won't eat any vitamins or gas chewables.I am very frustrated for her and tired of the smell. She is up to date on shots.

Finicky dogs can be tough to get to eat pet food if they are used to eating people food. For pets with a pancreatitis, I recommend to feed the Royal Canin Low Fat or Hill's I/D Low Fat. Make sure to speak with your veterinarian before making any changes to her diet. These diets come in both canned and dried. Generally these diets are low residue and so should help with the gas. While most dogs can be gradually weaned from human food, you should also ask your vet about this first. Also make sure she is checked for parasites and giardia which can cause irritation in the colon which could allow production of the bad gas as well. If Akoya can lose weight, this can help with the breathing issues. Remember weight loss most be slow (<2% of total body weigth per week). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
