My 4-month-old kitten needs shots. Does he need a vet exam first?

I have a kitten that is 4 months old. He has not gone to the vet yet or had any of his shots. Should he go get an exam at the vet before getting some of the shots? We are going to take him to a different place for the vaccinations. Is it better to wait for the exam appointment? Also, what are the essential vaccines for a kitten? Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 26 days old | 3.5 lbs

Hello. Normally, a thorough exam is done prior to administering vaccinations. Ideally at this time, heart, lungs, eyes & ears are all examined. A fecal examination & a test to check for the presence of two very important viruses are completed in office. If all is well, Lumi will be vaccinated for the routine feline respiratory series & feline leukemia. Most states require a rabies vaccination at 3-4 months of age. Your veterinarian will discuss any further booster vaccinations at this time, but at least one additional set should be administered 3-4 weeks after this initial one.
