My kitten has diarrhea and blood. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 26 days old

My 16 week old kitten seems to have diarrhoea and he just used his litter tray and a small price got stuck to his bottom. I removed it a noticed a tiny bit of blood. Should I be worried? We’ve had him a week tomorrow and I know his diet has changed slightly. He seems happy and he’s playful. Has a good appetite too. Any advise?

There can be a lot of causes of diarrhea in kittens. Typically the most common cause is a parasitic infection but bacterial or a viral infection could also be possibilities. Rapid change of the food can also cause diarrhea. I would recommend Kitten see her veterinarian soon for an exam and fecal test to check for causes. He may need antibiotics, anti-parasitics, or other medications to help solve the diarrhea.
