My 10-week Shih Tzu puppy has a soft belly lump with a hole. Hernia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 6 days old | 5 lbs

I have a 10 week old shih tzu puppy, we have noticed in the last few days a lump the size of a 20p coin on her belly. It is very soft but when you press on it it feels like underneath the lump there is a hole. It isn't painful when pressing it. Unable to see the lump as under fur.

What you're describing could be a congenital inguinal hernia, which is relatively common in puppies and if needed is usually repaired during spay/neuter procedures. That said, with any new lump or bump, especially if it is growing in size, suddenly appearing, or bothersome, should be checked out by your vet in person to confirm what it is and what the best course of treatment may be.
