My dog eats his poop and strains to poop. What could be wrong?

Hello, I was wondering why my dog is eating his own poop. Also every morning when I take him outside right away he will start whining and barking and trying to go potty but he can't. I know they are weird questions but just wanted to see if anyone knew why. Thanks

Usually coprophagia, or eating poop, is a learned behavior and not a sign of a medical problem. Some dogs like to do this for whatever reason, and picking poop up immediately is the best way to discourage it. I would recommend having your vet examine Scout and perform a rectal exam to make sure there isn't something abnormal that might cause pain when he is attempting to defecate (potentially an anal gland problem or polyp or growth in the rectum).
