My dog has a new lump that won't go away. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 8 months old | 80 lbs

My 5 year old German Shepherd.Alaskian Malmute showed up with this 4-5 days ago. She has been acting normal, eating, drinking etc. She doesn't seem to be in pain. was hoping it would just go away. but it hasn't so I'm getting worried. any clues to what it is or what I can do for her to help it go away? Thank you. Carol

I would recommend a vet visit for this. From the photo it’s impossible to differentiate a possible abscess from a tumor. But if it came up quickly I would recommend having it assessed fairly soon. Your vet may want to do a needle aspirate or a biopsy to determine what type of mass/lesion it is.
