My dog has luxating patella. Is her leg lifting normal or worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 13 lbs

Chispas has luxating patella and we have notice that when she walks alittle fast she sometimes lifts her leg and kicks it back and continues like nothing happens. Is this normal for her? Also she had a very mild case in her right hind can that change with time to be worse? Thanks

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. What you are describing is pretty normal in dogs that have been diagnosed with luxating patella(s). The best option for dogs with this issue (grade 2 and above) is surgery to correct the problem. Without surgery the constant rubbing of the patella (knee cap) over the underlying bone will cause joint pain and arthritis over time. I suggest you speak to your vet more about the problem and/or get a referral to an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. In the meantime, definitely get her on a good joint supplement like Dasuquin with MSM to help her joints.
