My dog has diarrhea but acts normal. When should I contact the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

Hello, My dog has been experiencing diarrhea all day, but his behavior and appetite have been completely normal. He just had another loose bowel movement on a bathroom mat that looks concerning to me. He did have a few bites of one of his puppy friend’s food yesterday before I caught him and took it away, but it didn’t seem like he ate much of it. I have attached a photo of the concerning bowel movement in hopes for some advice on if I should contact the vet. Thank you!

It looks like he has colitis which could be secondary to eating his puppy friend's food. If he is otherwise acting normal, you can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice along with a tablespoon of canned pumpkin and see if the diarrhea resolves. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting or becomes lethargic then he should be examined and treated by your vet.
