Why does my dog have recurring scabs on his neck after vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 85 lbs

3 wks ago I found a weeping sore on my dog's neck. We saw a vet 2 days later but by then it had scabbed. They said it was from scratching and gave us Derma Vet. Today I found 4 new similar scabs on his neck. I check him regularly so this happened in the past day. He gets Cytopoint shots, takes NexGard, his nails are trimmed, and I have not noticed any scratching. We changed his food but that was after the first scab. No other changes to environment or activity. Looking for a 2nd opinion.

It looks like he has a skin infection and probably needs an oral antibiotic. He should be re-examined by your vet for treatment. Dogs with allergies are more prone to developing infections. You can also bathe him with an antibacterial dog shampoo.
