Can old dog vestibular disease symptoms vary in severity and type?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 32 lbs

My dog has possible old dog vestibular disease. It seems like a very mild case. Just walking a little drunk and swaying. She has no head tilt and no nystagmus. She is eating and drinking normally. She was checked out by the vet and given prednisone. Can it vary in degree of severity? She is improving daily it seems.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, the vestibular disease symptoms can vary from very mild (confusion, wobbly legs, head tilt) to severe ( lack of balance, vomiting, panting, nystagmus). If Bella is improving that is great news, hopefully she will be back to normal soon. Typically, it takes around 10-14 days for older dogs to get it over with.
