My pet is limping and missing a nail. Is her paw broken or infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

She is limping and when I observed her front right paw it appears she is missing a nail. She is not bleeding but it appears that area of her paw is very sensitive and she won’t put much weight on it. I can touch the rest of her paw without her crying but when I get the the area her nail should be she cries.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect Narcissa has broken her nail and the nail bed may be exposed. This can be a very painful condition, particularly when the nail bed gets infected. A visit at your local vets is recommended to fully assess the damage and to prescribe medications for Narcissia, likely a course of pain killers and antibiotics.
