My dog keeps throwing up plastic. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 6 lbs

For the past two mornings my dog has woken up to throw up. Both times there were really tiny bits of plastic in her vomit. The second time it came with a small chunk of undigested food as well. It was also only a small amount of vomit. No strange colored bile. She hasn’t been lethargic at all and is her usual self. She also still has an appetite. Should I continue to monitor her and take her to the vet if it continues, or does this sound serious enough to take her to the vet ASAP?

If she continues to have a good appetite, then I think you can continue to monitor at home. Try really hard to find where she is finding the plastic to eat. Small bits of plastic could cause enough irritation to the esophagus and stomach to lead to vomiting. If at any time she seems lethargic, has belly pain, if the vomiting becomes more frequent than once a day, or she has a decreased appetite, she should go to the vet right away.
