Do lanosterol eye drops work for dog cataracts without surgery?

I have a dog who has severe cataracts, I cannot afford the surgery to remove them... I have been reading about lanosterol eye drops, and was hoping to get an expert opinion on if they are a possible option, if they work or are more of a pseudoscience in the vein of herbal medicine... From what I understand, lanosterol is shown effective in laboratory situations but little research has been done in live animals. Most research has been done with cataracts in the lab soaking in the lanosterol. The drops is a real eye has to travel through the cornea and the interior of the eye to reach the cataract. So far the consensus is that it's somewhat promising but not very effective yet and therefore may be a waste of money.
