My cat's nail bled after I cut it too short. Should I call the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 21 days old

Hi, I accidentally cut my cats claws too low and it bled for literally a few seconds. It’s stopped bleeding now and she seems okay running around happy not limping or licking her paw. Should I contact my vet Incase? Maybe get antibiotics?

Hello. This is a common occurrence and is usually not a medical issue. If the bleeding has stopped, I would recommend that you simply monitor her foot for a few days. These short nails rarely become infected. If you notice any swelling or if she licks and bites at it all the time, have it checked out....but home monitoring is sufficient for now. ThAnk you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Most of these wounds do not become infected, but it is a good idea to watch the area for the next few days for swelling and discharge. If this occurs, a visit to your vet is needed. Also, keep the kwik-stop handy the next 24 hours because some of the nails will start bleeding again if the animal jumps around or is more active.
