My cat was exposed to essential oil diffuser. Are my cats safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old

I used an essential oil diffuser for no more than 3 mins before checking safety in houses with pets. Will my cats be okay? I’ve now opened the windows and turned it off and put it away. They didn’t get too close I don’t think.

Hello there, With such a short exposure time and you already opening your windows to increase air flow, I believe your cats should be just fine. You can use essential oil diffusers, but you need to use oils that are not known to cause toxicities, dilute them heavily, and only use in a space with good air flow, or an open window. Here is an article with more information about essential oil toxicities in cats- it lists the most problematic oils we know about: https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-you-need-to-know-about-essential-oils-and-cats/ Thanks for using PetCoach. Have a good day!
