Why is my kitten sleepy, slow, and not eating after being outdoors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 6 days old | 3 lbs

Hi I have a 6 month old male kitten that has not been himself since last night. He's very drowsy and slow moving, I got him to walk around last night and he used his litter box but wouldn't eat or drink. He doesn't seem twitchy or off balance or anything just very mellow and slow moving and sleepy even when sitting up it's like he's too tired to hold his head up all the way. He is mostly indoors but escapes at every opportunity and had gotten out Saturday night and was out for hours

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chad. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. His behavior is not normal. Young kittens can become very sick quickly. He will become dehydrated from not eating and drinking properly. The veterinarian will examine him and try to determine the cause of his symptoms. He may need testing such as fecal or blood work to help reach a diagnosis. He could have a gastrointestinal tract infection, a respiratory tract infection or even a toxin exposure. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help him feel better. I hope this information helps!
