My dog barks when I leave. How to calm his separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | 8 lbs

Hi there, I have a yorkie and his name is king, I found him on the side of the road about 10 months ago, and I notice he does this pose sometimes. I think it’s because he’s anxious but I don’t know how to calm him down, I walk him a lot but he gets like this whenever we get dressed, pick up our keys, or when he wants to sit on the couch. He also barks when we leave and we can’t leave him alone or he’ll bother the neighbors with the barking so maybe separation anxiety? Thank you for you time.

Hello. This is very likely a form of separation anxiety. Working with a professional trainer would give you the best & quickest outcome, especially since you do not know his previous history. Giving King a lot of toys, especially puzzle treats, should help to keep him busy while you are gone. Leaving the TV & a radio on in another room may help, but if not, then you can talk to your veterinarian about some drug options. We do not want to knock him out, but even with training, a highly anxious dog may benefit from a calming medication. Good luck & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
