Going by the information you provided about Captain, a commercial adult dog food would be appropriate for him. If he's very active or a working dog, looking toward a working dog or high protein diet can help ensure he keeps enough weight on while still being very active, however if he is a pet, a regular maintenance dog food will be more than enough. Science Diet and Royal Canin are both good brands to stick with. You will want to offer meals 2-3 times a day to help keep his stomach from getting too empty or full and causing digestive upset. If he's not wanting to eat the food you're offering, removing any extras such as people food and treats will help encourage him to eat his food. Just like people, dogs can be picky and get addicted to "junk" food. If he doesn't eat the meal, pick it up, and try again an hour or two later. If he's not eating at all, or seems ill, a vet visit to rule out any health issues causing him to lose his appetite is best.
