Why is my cat peeing often, straining, and dragging her butt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 lbs

I have three cats, 2 male, one of them castered, and a female named Aldo who is castered and they used the same litter box, after a while I bought three new litter box, only now my castered cat (Aldo) is constantly going on litter box urinating several times a day in small amounts and sometimes she stays in the litter box for about 5 minutes, and when she comes out of the litter box she sometimes drags the butt on the floor. What do you think it can be? what should I do?

She may be developing a urinary tract infection. That may account for the trips to the box and straining to urinate. Confirmation is by an exam with your veterinarian and submission of a sterile urine sample for urinalysis and culture. The scooting may be due to impacted anal glands. Your veterinarian can quickly confirm this during the exam and express (empty) them if necessary. Given current events, you may need to drop her off at the clinic then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss exam findings and treatment options.
