My dog's first heat: painful swollen vulva. Is this normal for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 29 days old | 9.9 lbs

April 13 was Kelpie's first period, so her vagina was swollen and I waited for the swelling to subside. However, there is no more blood, just swelling and pain to the point that she can no longer sit or sleep due to discomfort. Is this inflammation normal?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No, painful swellings of vagina are not normal in heat. Please, take Kelpie to your local vets as she may have vaginal infection or mild vaginal prolapse, which are not uncommon in young dogs during or just after the heat. If it is a mild or partial prolapse, your very will probably recommend neutering to avoid this problem in the next heat.
