My cat's eye is itchy and losing hair. Is it allergies? What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon Polydactyl | Female | spayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 14 lbs

My cat keeps itching above her right eye and is loosing hair. She has had allergies so I changed her to a limited ingredient diet and freeze dried raw diet for snacking. She itches so hard she slices the corner of her eye open. since the diet change she looks much better, but I am still worried about her eyes and the patch above her eye. I am 3 hours away from the nearest vet In summer

If this is due to allergies, then an eye drop with a steroid from the veterinarian would certainly help. If you are too far from a veterinarian, you can try an antihistamine eye drop and see if this helps. I've recommended Zaditor (ketotifen fumarate) for cats and dogs before and have seen good improvement with the symptoms. This is at most drug stores / grocery stores in the eye drop aisle. If this does not resolve or worsens, then I would get her in to be seen by the veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
