Dog's red skin, ear buildup, and dandruff: tried everything, what now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 7 months old | 47 lbs

My dog (male, jack russel terrier mix, 4 years) has recently been experiencing redness on his inner back legs, red ears with what looks like buildup of dead skin, and dandruff on the backs of his ears, especially prevalent around the base. We have tried: allergy medicine, changing food, changing bathing frequency and products, and using moisturizing natural remedies on the affecting areas with no success. I clean his ears daily with warm water and the buildup always returns. Any advice?

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Noah with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get him to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting him on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).
