My dog has diarrhea. What can I feed him instead of antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 12 lbs

My dog has been having diarrhea for the past few days. There is no blood, just mucus and yellow in color. His energy level is great, his gums look healthy, and he eats and drinks just fine. The vet recommended antibiotics but I don't want to give him any just yet hoping it can go away on its own. Shall I restrict his food for 24 hours? not sure what to do next.

The bowel recovers best with food in it but I would recommend feeding a bland diet of specialist intestinal diet or boiled chicken and brown rice with a probiotic such as fortiflora for 48-72hours. I generally hold off with antibiotics unless there is a fever, significant blood or the patient is unwell with additional complications
