It may be a benign mass or a malignant tumor. The only way to know which s to have Max physically examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. If Maxi is due for a dental cleaning any time soon, the mass could be taken off while he is under anesthesia. Monitor for rapid change or growth. If Max licks or chews at the lump, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

I’m worried that is a tumor of some kind. It may also have become infected. Take him to a vet so that he or she can evaluate it and do an full physical exam. I suspect this will need to be surgically removed. It’s impossible to know ahead of time whether the tumor is benign (in which removal could be curative) or malignant (at danger of coming back or spreading elsewhere) without submitting the mass for histopathology after removal; so talk to your vet about submitting the mass after surgery. Your vet may recommend doing a fine needle aspirate to get a better idea of what type of mass it is prior to surgery—this can give un indication of how dangerous the tumor is—but submitting the tissue after surgery is needed for a definitive answer. If your vet suspects it is infected, he or she will probably recommend antibiotics be started before surgery. I hope that’s helpful! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
