When to euthanize a senior dog with a tumor who seems happy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 3 months old | 33 lbs

Should I put my dog down? 14.5 years, schnauzer/poodle mutt, eating well, walking 1-2 miles/day, generally happy and (seemingly) pain free. The problem: a tumor/growth below the left ear. It doesn't bug her, we think - she doesn't scratch at it. Web research suggests that it's way too expensive to treat/remove. Not sure what's ethical here. I would appreciate advice beyond "take your dog to the vet" - that costs money and (again) the vet would only suggest too-expensive treatment. Thanks!

It sounds like Josie is doing very well for her age!!! Her quality of life sounds great. As long as the mass is not bothering her and is not draining or seems infected then it's perfectly acceptable to let her live her life. It does not sound by your description that euthanasia is warranted. I would say keep doing what you are doing and if she starts acting off or not doing what she normally would like to do then it's time to see your vet.
