Why is my dog gulping, licking, and acting lethargic at night?

I woke up to my Jackchi swallowing, gulping (almost hiccuping) and licking either his paw or the air continuously at 3am this morning. He ate and pooped regularly with normal energy during day but last night before bed he was a bit lethargic and moody (pain?). He’s now still pretty sleepy this morning. But I stopped the licking and gulping by petting him and keeping my hand on him when we woke up in the middle of the night... Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

It sounds like Scrappy was uncomfortable last night, licking and gulping excessively to me sounds like he may be nauseous or having some G.I. discomfort. Just keep a close eye on him today for now. If he does not want to eat, or starts vomiting or having diarrhea then you should probably take him into the vet to be checked out.
