I just purchased a created gecko that’s a little over a month old. I found his tail last night, and there’s a small crevice of his tank he won’t leave. I put down paper towels instead of the coconut substrate. I’ve read it’s best to keep them in a smaller tank while the wound heals, but it’s already stressed and not eating. Should I move it to a smaller habitat, or do you think the stress will be too much?

if you can keep the area clean, then leave him there. Losing a tail is stressful enough without dealing with a new environment. Change the paper towels daily or every second day. Have food and water available at all times. Monitor for redness, swelling or discharge. See your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet if necessary. Given a clean environment, the stump should heal on its own. Crested geckos do not regrow their tails.
