What's the best dry cat food for my cat on a college budget?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 9 lbs

I’m a college student and I have limited funds. However, I want the best cat food as possible for my kitty. What is the best dry cat food for its price? I’m currently feeding him Purina One.

I understand that it can be quite confusing to know what is good food versus bad food with all the conflicting information out there, but you definitely don't need to break the bank to feed good food. Also, there is A LOT misleading and outright false information amongst various people in the community, which may make you feel like you're feeding an inadequate or dangerous food. Purina One is a good food that I have fed to pets in the past. I have no problem with it and would only suggest that you ensure the food is labeled for Greyson's life stage. Below is a link that explains how to check the product for this information. There is no one food that I think is superior to any other and the reality is that they are all quite similar and provide adequate nutrients. https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-to-look-for-when-choosing-your-pet-s-food I hope that helps. If I missed something, please feel free to post the question again.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that Hill's Science Diet and Purina one and Proplan are great foods. I also like Iams. I just recommend watching cats for excessive weight gain. I wish you and Greyson the best!
