My puppy is still coughing on antibiotics. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My puppy was given antibiotics for possible bronchitis/pneumonia and he’s been on it for 6 days. He’s not lethargic and still has an appetite and seems perfectly fine during the day but at night when he lays down he starts coughing and gagging and rubbing his mouth. He still has a few days worth of pills left so how long should it take for his cough to go away completely and should I take him back to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would call your Vet today and tell them that he is better but still has the cough. I would consider extending the antibiotics for 2 weeks and prescribing a cough suppressant for the night time. If Cotter has kennel cough, it can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. If he is still coughing at 2 weeks then I would recommend X-rays of his chest. I wish you the best!
