My puppy's first diarrhea after eating new treats. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 2 months and 20 days old | 36 lbs

My 12 weeks old standard poodle pup just had the very first diarrhea. Her first two third of the poop was solid but latter one third was liquid. She had her regular meals today, and I only gave her finger nail size of a pizza chips, a small pork jerky snack and a small chicken popcorn, all very small piece. Should I be concerned? She only had her first vaccine so far. Thanks.

I would watch her closely for the next few days. If the loose stools continue then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian. Also, if she vomits or if her appetite is off please have her seen. If she resolves then I would just be very cautious about the treats that you introduce. I would go very slow with what you offer her, such as 1 new type of treat at a time. My standard poodle is very sensitive and the only treats I give him are pieces of bland grilled chicken that I have prepared and frozen for treats. He doesn’t tolerate other treats. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
