Dog spay incision has dark stuff. Is it healing? Should I clean it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 4 lbs

Do these seem to be healing well? She had surgery on April 18th. Also, what is the dark stuff on the spay incision? Will it fall off? Or will I eventually have to clean it? I don’t know what the bump was but I should know in a few weeks. I’m hoping for something like a cyst or anything else benign since it grew slowly from June 2017 to April 2018 & never bothered her. What do you think?

This appears to be healing well. However, you must not let Prescious lick the incision. There is a tiny bit of pus visible which is likely caused by excessive licking. You can have that checked by your vet, or wait and see if it heals by itself once your dog stops licking the wound. Leave the incision alone and don't clean it. The black stuff are crusts that will fall off when they need to.
