My cat shows labor signs, but I feel no movement. Did she give birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is showing sign of labor (more loving/ needy lately, pink nipples, discharge, excessive licking and so on) but when I try to feel to see if the kittens are moving, there is absolutely nothing. I can’t feel her kittens moving at all so I was wondering if it’s possible she had her kittens somewhere and just left them, should I be worried?

Sometimes indoor/outdoor cats will choose to have their kittens outside, usually in a quiet area. It’s possible that she’s visiting the kittens. On the other hand you can’t always feel kittens moving and it can actually be a little difficult to tell if a female cat is pregnant just by feeling her belly. You could check her mammary glands for milk production although this too can be difficult to confirm, and milk can come in shortly before kittens are born. The best thing to do would be to take her to a veterinarian who could confirm pregnancy with an x-ray and might be able to tell you about when to expect kittens.
