My dog has new bumps and hair thinning. What's the likely cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Redbone Coonhound | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 67 lbs

Carol started to get bumps on the top of her head and down her torso that were itchy. The itch reduced with benadryl. We also did Prednisone for 2 days as her vet thought it was a reaction to a bug bite. The prednisone was stopped b/c GI upset. Bumps cleared. Last week I noticed that her hair is thinning on her lower lumbar as well as another bump. This one is more visible and is larger (about 2cm×1cm), also feels different; less like a bug bite or a scab. I am unsure if theserelated.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. While this may be related to the itchiness and inflammation, this can also be an isolated issue. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
