My dog has a pimple-like bump. Is it serious? What should I put on it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 17 days old | 50 lbs

As I was petting her yesterday I noticed a pimple like bump on her left side. Could this just be a bug bite? Or something more serious? Should I put anything on it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could also be a bug bite or site of infection. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. You can try using a thin film of triple antibiotic in case it is truly just an infection or bug bite. Good luck and have a good day!
