My puppy bit me. Can puppies be born with rabies? Do I need a shot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 33 lbs

Mikay's pup, Mimay, who is 2 mos old accidentally bite me in the hands. Mikay has complete vaccination & anti-rabies when she was pregnant and it expired when she gave birth. (She gave birth last Feb 18, her vaccine was expired last Feb. 22). The pups and mama dogs are scheduled to have their vaccination next month bcoz we are lack of funds for the five puppies. My question is, do puppies really have rabies when they are born? Is it ok if I dont get an injection immediately? Thanks in advance!

Puppies are not "born" with rabies but they can get it from the mother's infected milk. The puppies will not have rabies if the mother does not have rabies and I highly doubt she has rabies. I would only suggest a rabies vaccination series for you if: 1. You were bitten by a dog that we know 100% for sure has rabies 2. You were bitten by a stray dog that you do not know the vaccination history Since you were bitten by your own dog that has been previously vaccinated I would not worry. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
