Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 11 months and 20 days old | 13 lbs
Our dachshund is quiet and relaxed. He hardly ever barks when with us. He’s only barked when the only person in the house is in the shower and they’re quiet. He doesn’t bark at anything else. But when we leave the house, He barks and escapes the crate. How do we stop this behavior?

Poor Oscar! Barking constantly and trying to escape from his crate or other confinement area when left alone are very common signs of separation anxiety. This essentially means that he has a panic attack every time you leave - so you will need to address the anxiety in order to stop the unwanted behavior. I would recommend talking you your veterinarian about this issue as a starting point, since most dogs with significant separation anxiety will need prescription anti-anxiety meds in order to successfully treat the problem. You may also be able to help by leaving him with a special long-lasting treat each time you leave, such as a pig's ear or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. DAP pheromone diffusers, calming music, and a white noise machine to help block out outside sounds can also be helpful for many dogs. If your regular vet isn't well-versed in treating behavior issues, you may want to consider making an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist instead. He/she can help you put together a detailed plan to work on Oscar's anxiety issues, including medication if needed.
