Why is my dog throwing up and not eating, but vet found nothing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old

Last week my dog started throwing up and for a few days only ate a tiny bit and today he won’t eat at all. We have taken him to the vet but they have no idea what’s wrong with him cause everything looks ok. He is drinking water but not eating at all. What is wrong with him?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Max. These cases can definitely be frustrating as there are numerous causes of vomiting. It can be due to stress, a diet change, an intestinal infection, a foreign body obstruction or an internal problem affecting the liver, kidneys, pancreas or adrenal glands. Not knowing what has been done so far, I would recommend bloodwork and a urinalysis as well as abdominal x-rays. If those have been done and are normal, then he could be treated conservatively with fluids and anti-vomiting medication. If he is very ill though, I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound next. I hope this information helps!

Persistent inappetence is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence last for more than 24hours. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
