My dog has a hard, nasty lump on his paw. What should I do next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 95 lbs

My 3 year old mastiff mix has a lump on the side of his left paw. It's nasty looking. His behavior isn't changed. He's still eating, drinking, and acting normal. No weight loss. Been there 1 wk +/-. It doesn't seem to bother him, or hurt him. He lets me touch it. It's hard, and there's nothing under the surface that I can feel. I am broke right now, and am waiting for payday to takehim in, but I have literally worried myself sick over it. Google has not helped my worry either.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You could consider your local humane society as they often times offer veterinary care at more affordable prices. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
