My dog has a swollen, bleeding anus and isn't eating. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

My 4 yr old chihuahua 3 days ago started swelling like she was going into heat. She always doesn't feel well during that time.. But last night I noticed it was swelling on one side of her anus she felt really bad. She isn't eating or drinking much. Then this morning my husband took her outside and when she tried to use the bathroom blood came out of her anus. Swelling has gone down some. What do we do???

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Litl Bit! It sounds as though she had an anal gland abscess that ruptured. If the bleeding is coming from a small opening next to her anus that is what it looks like. Before it ruptures there can be a swelling next to the anus then it pops and blood and pus comes out. She should wear an E-collar and you can clean the area if she lets you. Warm compress it twice today. Make an appointment first thing tomorrow with your Vet so they can express the anal glands and start her on antibiotics and pain medications. I hope this helps!
