Is my ferret's rear prolapsed if the vet says it looks normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old

My ferret, Sammy has a prolapsed rectum. I took him to the vet twice, paid a ton of money and he was put on antibiotics for a UTI. She took an X ray and ran a fecal test and everything came back normal. The vet said his anus “looks great”. I came home after dropping him off for the day and noticed that his behind looked exactly the same as the first and second time I brought him in. This was weeks ago. I’m not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Trust your veterinarian. Sammy's rectum indeed is not proplapsed. If it was prolapsed you would see bright red mucous membrane (looks almost like firm jelly) protruding. There are pictures on the internet: Put "prolapsed rectum ferret" into your browser and then click on "Images". You will see what a prolapsed rectum looks like. Here is also some info on the condition: https://www.petcoach.co/article/prolapsed-rectum/ So, if Sammy, eats, drinks and plays and overall appears happy, does not vomit or have diarrhea, then you do not need to worry.
