My medium dog ate chocolate. Should I worry or induce vomiting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 50 lbs

Not sure if our dog ate chocolate. She might have ate at least one piece of small valentines chocolate with filling. She is a med size dog. Should we induce vomiting. This happened about 15 minutes ago.

A 50 pound dog would take 2.5 to 3 oz of dark chocolate or 6 oz of milk chocolate to be problematic. As long as it wasn’t that amount or more (unlikely if it was just one piece), then you should be ok. Of course if you have any concerns please have him evaluated by a veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would agree as well. This would be a small dose of chocolate for that size of dog. If any clinical signs would be observed, it would be gastrointestinal signs such as nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Other signs like trembling are possible though unlikely. If any of these signs are observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
