New cat has a cold and congestion. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | 1 year old | 6 lbs

We just adopted a one year old male domestic medium shorthair a week ago yesterday. He was nuetured on the 10th, 1 day before we got him. He has had a cold for 3 days. Still eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and playing. He sneezes a little but is more congested then anything. Hes still able to breath through nose properly. Only clear discharge from right eye. How long should should I wait until I bring him to the vet. Hes already been through so much, I'm sure it's new environment/stress.

Poor Dusty. First, you can try starting him on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If he's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. If he is still sick on Monday, then I would bring him into the vet.
