How do I stop my 9-month-old dog's occasional indoor potty accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 8 months and 14 days old | 45 lbs

My 9 month old black lab/border collie is mostly potty trained, he has a doggy door that he uses on his own but once every four days or so he’ll still have an accident inside. He seems to understand where the bathroom is, how to I get him to stop having accidents inside completely?

I recommend crate training or restricting his area to just outside the doggie door. He doesn't quite understand that the whole house is never to be pottied in and until he understands this, he may continue to have accidents in the house. The longer this behavior goes on, the harder it may be to change it. Gradually he can gain freedom as he exhibits the desired behavior. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
