Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 90 lbs

My dog a red nose pitbull male non neutered, has an open sore on his scrotum. It is about the size of a quarter. It scabs but then he licks it and it bleeds alot. His previous owner said this has happened before and there is nothing that can be done just leave it and it will eventually heal. His scrotum is also red and swollen . Any ideas?

That spot on Jerzy could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just the spot). Protect the area from licking (he needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times). If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
