My dog has kennel cough after training; vet meds aren't helping.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 20 lbs

My boy has the bordetella shot, went to training camp for 3 weeks and returned with a cold like symptom. Has a lot of clear and yellowish mucus, he is eating a Banana and 1/2 cup of dried food daily. My vet recommended Amocixilin 250 every 8 hrs and a benadryl. It does not seem to help. What can I do to help him feel better and heal faster? im afraid it can complicate and I lost all trust on that Vet.

Poor Sebastian. Any dog with kennel cough should be isolated for at least two weeks, possibly longer depending on the severity of the infection. Keep your dog in a well-humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar to minimize coughing. Rest your dog for at least seven days to minimize irritation of the airways caused by excessive coughing. Give any medications as prescribed by your veterinarian. You can bring your dog into the bathroom with you while you have a shower, as the steam may help with the respiratory irritation. I hope this helps!
