Can I give my dog human fish oil for her joints if I can't afford dog vitamins?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | spayed | 11.2 lbs

My 12 year old Pekinese is visibly struggling with her joints. I was advised to put her on fish oil, but I can’t afford dog vitamins. According to some research I’ve done- she needs about 200mg per day. The human OTC fish oil pearls are 183mg each and humans take 3. Would it be safe to give my dog 1 of the human otc fish oil low dose pearls?

You can give human fish oil. Lily Sue can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. I'm not sure what she weighs, but she could probably have one or two tablets a day. Start with one to see how she goes. I would also consider getting pain medication from her vet. I hope this helps.
