New cockatiel vomiting and losing feathers. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

I was given a cockatiel yesterday, most feathers have been lost apparently due to stress and it's vomited on me twice since, definitely not regurgitation, sounded like a sneeze or spit. Is there any broad spectrum remedies as we don't have the best avian specialists in my area South Africa.

Thanks for reaching out about Jewel and including a photo. Regurgitation can be caused by many problems. Ingested foreign bodies, toxins, metabolic disorders, infections (bacterial, fungal, viral) and other problems are all possible. A veterinary visit is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan, and to provide medications. Good luck.
